Department of Urology
The department of Urology deals with all surgical conditions with Kidneys, Ureters, urinary bladder, urethra in males and females and also prostate glands in the male. Urology Department works in close association with Nephrologists, especially in the Kidney Transplant Unit.
Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs. The organs under the domain of urology include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis).
As a medical discipline that involves the care of many organs and physiological systems, urology can be broken down into several subdisciplines. At many larger academic centers and university hospitals that excel in patient care and clinical research, urologists often specialize in a particular subdisciplines like:
- • Endourology
- • Laparoscopy
- • Prostate Surgery
- • Urologic oncology
- • Neurourology
- • Pediatric urology
- • Andrology
- • Reconstructive urology
- • Female urology
The Department also works in tandem with Oncologist and Onco Surgeons. The Department covers the whole spectrum of patients who complain of
- • Reconstructive urology
- • Female urogenital disorder
- • Paediatric urogenital disorder
- • Renal Transplant Surgery etc
- • Ureterorenoscopy
- • Percutaneous Lithotripsy
- • Trans-urethral resection of prostate
- • Cystoscopy
- • Bladder stones
- • Radical Nephrectomy
- • Partial Nephrectomy
- • Radical Cystoprostatectomy
- • Radical prostatectomy
- • Pyeloplasty
- • Ureteric re-implantation for primary VU reflux / obstructive megaureter
- • Urethroplasty for stricture urethra
- • Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy
- • Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty
- • Laparoscopic Ureterolithotomy
Live related renal transplantation
Most commonly performed Laparoscopic (Key Hole, Minimally Access, Minimally Invasive surgery) procedures at DeepamPallavaram Hospitals include the following:
- • Laparoscopic nephrectomy (removal of kidney – for cancer or other destructive kidney diseases)
- • Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (for prostate cancer)
- • Laparoscopic removal of kidney cysts
- • Laparoscopic pyeloplasty (reconstruction of the urine-collecting system of the kidney for obstruction between the kidney and ureter)
- • Laparoscopic adrenalectomy (removal of adrenal gland)
- • Laparoscopic VVF Repair (Vesicovaginal Fistula)
- • Laparoscopic diverticulectomy (repair of abnormal pouches in Urinary bladder)
- • Laparoscopic Re-implantation of Ureter (for ureteric stricture, obstruction & VUR)
Endourology is the branch of Urology that deals with minimally invasive surgical procedures. As opposed to open surgery, endourology is performed using small endoscopes and instruments. Transurethral surgery has been the cornerstone of endourology. Most of the urinary tract can be reached via the urethra, enabling prostate surgery, surgery of tumors of the urothelium, stone surgery, and simple urethral and ureteral procedures.
(Holmium Laser Enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a modern alternative to the standard Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP).
Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is a procedure for doing surgery within the kidney using a viewing tube called a fiberoptic endoscope
Mini & Ultramini - (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy also refered to as Mini-Perc)
Urologic oncology concerns the surgical treatment of malignant genitourinary diseases such as cancer of the prostate, adrenal glands, bladder, kidneys, ureters, testicles, and penis. The medical treatment of advanced genitourinary cancer is managed by either a urologist or an oncologist depending on the cancer.
At Deepampallavaram Hospital all Urological cancer procedures are performed Laparoscopically.
Paediatric urology concerns urologic disorders in children. Such disorders include cryptorchism (undescended testes), congenital abnormalities of the genitourinary tract, enuresis, underdeveloped genitalia (due to delayed growth or delayed puberty, often an endocrinological problem), and vesicoureteral reflux. It also deals with paediatric stone diseases which are now managed endoscopically.
Our experts regularly perform complex procedures Laparoscopic like Uretric Re-implantation Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty … etc.
Andrology focuses on the male reproductive system. It is mainly concerned with male infertility; Sexual Dysfunction: Erectile Dysfunction and Ejaculatory Disorders. Since male sexuality is largely controlled by hormones, andrology overlaps with endocrinology. This condition is evaluated and treated by Urologist, initially through medication and then if required by surgery. Surgery in this field includes fertilization procedures, vasectomy reversals, and the implantation of penile prostheses. Vasectomies may also be included here, although most urologists perform this procedure.
We have a team of expert urologists who can perform TESA, PESA & Needle Testicular Biopsy routinely
Reconstructive urology is a highly specialized field of urology that restores function to any of various structures of the genitourinary tract. It deals with congenital anomalies of the genitourinary tract like pelvic ureteric junction obstruction, vesicoureteric reflux, urethral stricture disease any reconstruction of genitourinary tract post trauma, Illeal Replacement, continent diversion and Neobladder. We perform Baccal Mucosal urethroplasty fairly routinely at our hospital.
Urogynecology is a branch which deals with female pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and other voiding dysfunction in the females. It also covers the various fistulas like vesico vaginal, uretero vaginal and urethro vaginal fistulas. Thorough knowledge of the female pelvic floor together with urodynamic skills is necessary to diagnose and treat these disorders. Depending on the cause of the individual problem, a medical or surgical treatment can be the solution.
We have a team of expert Urologists who can perform all fistula repair laparoscopically as well as TVT – O for stress urinary incontinence.
